Disfrutando...: El blog de Tom: fotografías para descubrir Gloucester y a sus gentes

Cuando a Tom le preguntas qué es para él la fotografía, esto es lo que te responde:

"es la afición de una vida. Un reto. Comunicación. Una forma especial de arte diario. Un recuerdo del momento."

Al darme esta respuesta entendí por qué sus fotografías transmiten tanto. En ellas es capaz de captar el alma de las personas que fotografía y trasmitir el momento, hasta casi poder oir la música en blanco y negro, ver los fantasmas en esa iglesia que perdura en el tiempo o los colores de un seto a la entrada de una casa particular.

Conocí virtualmente a Tom durante el curso del LCL, y poco después descubrí su blog de fotografía, en el que nos invita a conocer Gloucester y sus alrededores con su particular visión tras la cámara.

En una charla de hace unas semanas, me habla de sus comienzos. "Comencé en la fotografía sobre 1966, usando una Halina 35X, en la que tenía que adivinar la distancia y todos los ajustes de exposición. Era todo manual. Me costó 6 libras que era el sueldo de una semana por aquellos entonces".

Durante años, ha estado haciendo paisajes urbanos y naturales, y sólo cuando compró su primera cámara digital "decente" una G10 (yo he tenido hasta hace poco una G9 que compré en 2009, así que realmente hace muy poco) empezó a hacer lo que los anglosajones llaman street photography o fotografía callejera, como a mi me gusta llamarla.

Y parece que gusta. En este último año, el blog se ha vuelto muy popular, tanto que hasta algún grupo local le ha llamado para conocerle al ver sus fotos. Cuando le preguntas por la experiencia de tener uno, confiesa: "Me he sorprendido de cómo un blog de repente se convierte en popular y eso te motiva para hacer más y más".

Si os asomáis a ver su trabajo, veréis que últimamente fotografía en blanco y negro. Y es que ha vuelto a tirar fotografías con carrete. De alguna manera encuentra la fotografía digital impersonal y le encanta la idea de tener que parar y pensar antes de disparar, algo que consigue cuando trabaja con carrete. Además, tiene un dark room donde revela y amplía sus fotografías, lo que hace que disfrute todavía más. "Me gusta tener las fotografías en la mano, no solo on line. Estoy reaprendiendo tanto, y disfrutando tanto".

Y eso se nota.

Espero que sus fotos os hagan viajar tanto como a mi. Y es que, como él dice "la fotografía es un lenguaje universal".

When you ask Tom what is photography for him, this is what he answers: “It is a lifelong hobby. A challenge. Communication. It is a special kind of everyday art, and record of the moment”.

Getting this answer made me understand why his photos transmit so much. His is able to capture the soul of the persons he photographs and transmit the moment, until almost hearing the music in black and white, seeing the phantoms in that church which stands over the centuries or the colours of a bush at the entrance of any house.

I virtually met Tom during LCL course, and only a few time later I discovered his photography blog, in which he invites us to get to know Gloucester and its surroundings with his particular vision behind the camera.

During a talk some weeks ago, he told me about his beginnings. “I started in photography around 1966, using a Halina 35X. It was a 35mm camera, like a rangefinder camera, but without a rangefinder. I had to guess the distance and all the exposure settings. I saved up for it when I first started work. It cost me £6 which was a week’s wage in those days”.

He has been shooting landscapes and cityscapes for years, and only very recently when he got his first “decent” digital camera, a G10 (I have had a G9 that I bought in 2009 till a couple of months ago, so short time) he started doing street photography.

And I guess we all like it. During this last year, the blog has become very popular, so much that even a local group (Gloucester Strings) have called him to meet after seeing the pictures he shot at them when acting in the street.

When you ask him about the experience of having a blog, he confess: “I have been amazed at how suddenly a blog can become popular and it just motivates you to do more and more”.

If you pop up to see his work, you will see that lately he is shooting in black and white. And this is because he is back shooting film. Somehow he finds digital impersonal and he loves the idea of stoping and thinking befote shooting, something that he gets when he works with film. What is more, he has a dark room where he developes and enlarge his pictures, which makes him enjoying even more. “I like having a photo in my hand, not just online. I am re-learning so much but enjoying it”.

And that is something you can feel.
